Archbishop Fulton Sheen beatification
Among the 50,000 pilgrims attending the Sept. 24 Beatification Mass of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen – known as a staunch preacher of the Gospel through modern communications – were clergy and laity from the Diocese of Sioux City.
Bishop John E. Keehner of the diocese was one of 89 bishops in attendance for the beatification at the Dome of the America’s in St. Louis. Five diocesan priests were among the 1,000 at the Mass and seven diocesan seminarians – all but those studying in Rome - were amid the estimated 850 at the liturgy. Laity from the diocese were also there, although the number is uncertain as arrangements were on their own.

“For many, attending a beatification is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This is even more true when getting to do so in our home country,” said Father Shane Deman.

Bishop Keehner speaks on St. Francis at BCU
Bishop John E. Keehner presented a talk titled Franciscan Values: Rooted in the Person of Christ on Sept. 29 at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City as part of the Sister Ruth Agnes Lecture Series during this Jubilee Year of St. Francis.
Acknowledging he was by no means an expert on St. Francis, the bishop pointed out he has read several biographies about the saint and has made several trips to Assisi, enabling him to know the saint on more than a superficial level.
“And so, I stand before you as a fellow disciple, as one sharing in devotion to Francis and to the values he espoused and promoted in his Franciscan order – values which have come down to us in various forms – first through the Franciscan Sisters of Dubuque who founded this institution of higher learning and in what we now see as the core Franciscan values espoused by Briar Cliff University,” said Bishop Keehner.

Parents and family members who have mourned the loss of an infant attended the Memorial Mass for Miscarriage and Infant Loss held Oct. 14 at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.
